Sarogleion Megaron

Saroglion is located on Vasilissis Sofias and Rigillis streets in Athens. A two-story neo-baroque building of 8,270 square meters, is a typical example of eclecticism. Its name came from the great National Benefactor Officer Petros Saroglos. Today, the building houses the Armed Forces Officers’ Club (LAED).

The will of Petros SaroglouBuilding construction

Petros Saroglou’s will was drawn up in 1909. In addition to collections of paintings, weapons, coins and jewels it contained also cash for the construction of the building. The building which lays on a plot of land of 2,425.95 sq.m., its construction began on June 24, 1929, and was completed at the end of 1932, beginning of 1933.

The Building through time

In 1992 the exterior of the building was renovated by the ministry of Defense, while in 1999 it suffered serious damages, as a result of the earthquakes of September 7 in Athens. After 5 years of restoration and radical renovation, in 2004 it reopened for housing the Armed Forces Officers’ Club.

Building’s interior

Saroglos, an art lover, offered a series of paintings consisting of 86 paintings by great Greek and foreign painters such as Lytras, Gyzis, Prosalentis, etc. It also hosts a valuable collection of weapons that adorn the Museum and various areas of the Club. In addition to the museum, the building also includes function rooms, a library, a reading room, and a restaurant.
