
Stathis Arapostathis is Professor in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Director of the Laboratory of Science, Technology and Innovation in Society (STIS). After studying Physics, he turned to the history and sociology of science and technology. His PhD was completed at the Faculty of Modern History, University of Oxford. He then worked for several years as a postdoctoral researcher in the UK on research projects at the University of Leeds, University of Oxford, University of Edinburgh, and University of Cardiff.
Since 2012, he has been teaching at NKUA, initially as a lecturer and, since 2024, as a full professor. He has been a visiting researcher with a Fulbright scholarship at the Center of Science and Innovation Studies, Law School, University of California at Davis (UC Davis) (2016), a visiting researcher at the Center of Hellenic Studies, Princeton University (2019), at CEPED, University Cite, Paris (2022–23), a visiting professor at the Science, Technology, Society Unit at the University of Graz, Austria (2023), and a visiting researcher with a scholarship from IFRIS at the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Sciences, Innovation, Society (LISIS)/INRAE (2023).
He has participated as a researcher and as a scientific coordinator in both international and national competitive research projects. His research focuses on the relationships between science, technology, and innovation and society and the economy. His focus is on transformations in the agrifood and energy systems and relevant innovations. He is the principal investigator of the HFRI-funded project titled “Go JuST: Governing Just Sociotechnical Transitions.”
He has co-authored the book “Patently Contestable: Electrical Technologies and Inventor Identities on Trial in Britain” (MIT Press, 2013) with Graeme Gooday, and “Agrifood Systems in Greece: Sociotechnical Dynamics and Sustainable Transitions” (Routledge, Forthcoming 2026) with Sotiris Alexakis, Ioannis Fotopoulos and Vasiliki Karantzavelou. He has edited or co-edited 9 collective volumes with international academic publishers and journals and has authored 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and 10 book chapters in international peer-reviewed volumes.
