Dr. Stefanos Fotiou is an environmental economist and sustainability leader with 30+ years across academia, international organizations, NGOs, and the private sector. He is the inaugural Director of FAO’s Office of Sustainable Development Goals and the founding Director of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, where he advances innovative sustainability governance and food systems transformation. He has designed integrated initiatives and mobilized hundreds of millions of dollars for climate action, environmental conservation, and natural resource management. He has held senior roles at FAO, UNESCAP, and UNEP, and has advised more than 60 countries. Known for interdisciplinary systems thinking, he links research, policy, and delivery, authoring UN reports and academic publications. He launched major capacity-building platforms, including the UN Youth Leadership Programme on Food Systems, the SDGs Helpdesk, and the Convergence Initiative. He holds a PhD in Natural Resource Economics and MSc degrees in Information Systems and Forestry & Natural Environment.
